K-Cops

Somebody burned me "Christopher O'riley plays Radiohead" album years ago. As I slammed my albums back to the shelf I found it again from the dust. Great stuff!

Rentun Ruusu

I sang this song when I was a little kid. Song about drunk man and his will-power.

VANHAINKOTI - Recording Diary 007

I've been using heavily Ring Modulation during mornings and late nights. 13 song basis... maybe 80% complete? They will come out as in ep format.

If you don't know what ring modulation is, you can read this...

From Wiki:

"Ring modulators frequency mix or heterodyne two waveforms, and output the sum and difference of the frequencies present in each waveform. This process of ring modulation produces a signal rich in overtones, suitable for producing bell-like or otherwise metallic sounds.

Two oscillators, whose frequencies were harmonically related and ring modulated against each other, produce sounds that still adhered to the overtones of the notes, but contain a very different spectral make up.

If the same signal is sent to both inputs of a ring modulator, the resultant harmonic spectrum is the original frequency domain doubled (if f1 = f2 = f , then f2 − f1 = 0 and f2 + f1 = 2f). However, some distortion occurs due to the forward voltage drop of the diodes.

Some modern ring modulators are implemented using digital signal processing techniques by simply multiplying the time domain signals, producing a mathematically perfect signal output.

Multiplication in the time domain is the same as convolution in the frequency domain, so the output waveform contains the sum and difference of the input frequencies. Thus, in the basic case where two sine waves of frequencies f1 and f2 (f1 < f2) are multiplied, two new sine waves are created, with one at f1 + f2 and the other at f2 − f1. The two new waves are unlikely to be harmonically related and (in a well designed ring modulator) the original signals are not present. It is this that gives the ring modulator its unique tones.

Intermodulation products can be generated by carefully selecting and changing the frequency of the two input waveforms. If the signals are processed digitally, the frequency-domain convolution becomes circular convolution. If the signals are wideband, this will cause aliasing distortion, so it is common to oversample the operation or filter the signals prior to ring modulation."

This guy Jan-Olof "Puppe" Strandberg taught me how to play bass when I was 15-16 years old. He owns the only "Bass Shop" here in Finland.

Night Of The Arts

Tomorrow it's the annual "Night Of The Arts" opening evening/night at Helsinki, the best part of the "Helsinki Celebration Weeks". One evening full of music, artists, art, performances, drunk people, sober people, nice vibes and one of the few events that I like with a lot of people. Is that even a sentence? Beats me... anyways.. I'm tired, this week has been a total blast of work.

My Hero

The View

This picture doesn't do any justice, but the view from our new apartment is something to be stared at. It's to the west. There's the tiny Helsinki center on the right, our new home is about 20 kilometers to east from there. Vuosaari, place where I was born and lived 20 years of my life. We have a little Sauna in our bathroom! Welcome!

When I Was 15, It Was A Very Good Year...

Yup, that's me on the left. My old friend Juhis on the right. Completely drunk on a bus going to some party where Juhis saw god for the first time...

When I was 15-17 years old, I rocked on with obscene make-up daily. I'm a man that hates violence, putting up some stupid looking "goth" make-up was actually the only way for me to stop those assholes at school for kicking my nerdy panic-attacked ass. I still remember those faces when they saw me for the first time with make-up on. Priceless.

Few years later I realized that I wanna wear Acapulco-shirts and smoke bad ass cigarettes.

These days I rock with color and big shirts. Purple, Yellow, Red, Green, Orange are my favorites.

Just be yourself cowboy.

Life is weird.

Little House On The Eerie

VANHAINKOTI - Recording Diary 006

Yesterday I started working on with the new songs. I had two 1 bar drum loops with project names "Dance" and "Jazz"...

"Dance"

It was a funky dance beat that I made, but the whole idea was to fuck that up and make a totally different song. I changed the sound of the beat to Analog Factory's "Nightlife" sound and it morphed into this weird "Somebody is trying to get his electronic instruments to work" or "Somebody is knocking on the submarine window"... very weird low sound with delay. Recorded that thing. Then I made a one hit pattern of conga sound, which I made have sex with the MDA RingMod VST (My favorite), panned the sound to the far right speaker. Sounds like somebody hitting a metal can. 90 bpm. Then I had the idea of putting "Chimes" sound. Found it, made the one hit pattern with that for every 16th. I put "Spacebirds" effect on top of it and I got this weird "Robot Chimes" sound. Works really cool. It needed more "Drums", I made a "Hi-Hat" pattern with Operator's "Toy-Box Granular Stretch" sound, panned it to the far left speaker. Added hi-hat delay and groove. It turned out to be this really old-school swing rhythm. It needed more to it, so I used "Bit Reduction/Downsample" effect to make it sound like broken Game-Boy soundtrack and it did! Recorded it and in the end of the song I messed around with "Bit Reduction" to make very weird and horrible "Noise Ending" to the song. Final touch was to add Operator's "Organ - Rasta Maan" sound... with MDA Overdrive VST and Drive Low delay I got this "Industrial Machine From Hell" sound. Recorded it while I played with the delay's pitch parameter. Fun, Slow, Silent and Weird. Just the way I like it. This song is almost done! Next!

"Jazz"

I had made a one bar loop of this Jazz rhythm. The song is 90 bpm and 6/4. I started fuck the drum sound up. Added Ringmod, Bit Reduction and Dub Delay. Made 4 different patterns, recorded and messed around with the effects. Very disturbing sounds with a swing! Fuck...
Then added a piano patterns which were duplicated from the drum patterns. Effects used were MDA Overdrive, Abstract Loop-Alienizer and Bit-Reduction. Same thing... Record, Mess around with the parameters and behold! Song is fucked up! I think they both need a little bit polishing and cross-fading, but they sound so abstract and odd that to me, they are almost done! Fun!

"Muffler Dance"

I worked a little bit more for this weird "Funky" over 20 minute song. Made a little adjustments to the track panning. Weird sound on the left, weird sound on the right. And recorded one new sound to the right, with operator and MDA vst's. Messed around with the frequencies and got out this "Horn from space" as I call it. Worked out perfectly to the song and used the sound on the end of the song to just play for 10 minutes or so. Pure trash ambient. The song is almost done. Polishing, listening, cross-fading etc.

Every song is coming along nicely. I'm putting a lot more work to my songs then usual and the results are great! Let's make things slow. Always. Slow like rendering 17 million polygons.

Not Giving A Fuck

VANHAINKOTI - Recording Diary 005

Today I listened to all my 9 recorded tracks and 2 (dance & jazz) of them are only 1 bar drum loops. I did a What To Do list so I know...What To Do with them. Helps a lot. Now that I listened to all of the songs, I think I need 3 to 5 new songs to record and after that I'm almost ready to make an EP out of them. Here's the list:

Note that these are only Project-file names, the real shit is in Finnish after they are done.

Analogjamslow
-add guitar
-maybe bass?

AutechreSquareHell
-Add noise pad, some kind of
-Maybe two?

Dance
-Fuck it up

Jazz
-Fuck it up twice

Massive
-Add very little of anything, this shit it is almost done baby!
-Weird guitar sound could easily ruin it, but it could also make this song a 100% motherfucking diamond! Think.

Mufflerdance
-Add more weird sounds
-Guitar/bass could work

Nirvana
-Record more guitars
-Add more noise
-Be cool

NativeVibes
-Add balcony field recording
-Try human voice sampling

Whistle
-Try human voice sampling

And also in the other news, I bought a "shakkirules.com" domain. Now I'm a total blogger pro. Fuck yes.
